we see a back edge to this rain now especially across northern virginia and the snow in our region is up a bit east of hagerstown, even emmetsburg in a dry spot. westminster might be getting a little snow, but there have been big changes within the last hour to the winter weather advisory. we look at that now and those winter weather advisories mostly canceled now. where they're still in effect, frederick county, washington county, panhandle of west virginia for two more hours. the storm is rapidly moving out. snow is not going to be a big dial, but cold. is even the rain now is -- deal, but cold is. even the rain now is beginning to darren off. 2 to 4 inches record -- to taper off. 2 to 4 inches record setting rainfall across d.c. told, winds continue tonight and a cold blustery start to our thursday. we'll talk more about the weekend in the five-day forecast in a few minutes. they are cold, they are hungry, but they don't dare

speak out. we are not talking about the homeless in our communities, but american troops in the war zone, soldiers in afghanistan putting food in blankets on their -- putting food and blankets on their christmas wish list. fox 5's bob barnard has been looking into this. >> we thought this was going to be one of those often told stories about people pulling together to gather up goodies to send to our soldiers overseas. instead we found a military family turning their sadness into action and exposing some cold hard truths about life for some of our troops in afghanistan. at the manassas office of keller williams real estate the mother, sister and girl friend of a northern virginia soldier killed in afghanistan three months ago are collecting christmas donations. they'll be sending them to doug green's platoon still in the war zone. >> when we created the douglas green foundation, we knew that he, of course, always wanted to serve and we knew that we wanted to continue his legacy

and it's with soldiers. >> reporter: but not just with stocking soldiers. they say some of our troops are begging for blankets and food. >> it's heartbreaking to know these guys are freezing and they're hungry and they don't do anything about, it so we are. >> reporter: doug green was stationed at an isolated outpost working 16-hour days often eating just one m.r.e. a day. he was the communications chief for the unit able to skype with his girl friend alicia schwannstrom. >> just seeing that look in his eyes was a game changer for me and seeing him eat a tuna packet and that's all he, had that broke my heart. so after doug died i adopted a soldier because i realized there are other guys out there who are in during the same -- who are enduring the same situation and i wanted to help out and a bunch of our friend as come thed soldier and the guy i adopt -- friends adopted soldiers and the guy i adopted said i'm freezing at night can.

you please send me a blanket. >> some of these guys are at the forefront of the war. there's nothing there. >> reporter: marty runs anysoldier.com a website allowing troops to place requests for anything they need. yes, some request for food, others want blankets. >> not everybody has barracks. not everybody goes home at night. unless you've been there it's hard to explain. war is not a fun place. >> reporter: but specialist green's sister chrissy says the pentagon should be doing more. >> don't even admit it. just start sending stuff over there. i don't care if anyone has to know about it as long as they're getting fed and staying farm and getting the comfort they need -- warm and getting the comfort they need for doing what they're doing over there. that's all that matters. >> reporter: the douglas j. green foundation has been collecting donations all over virginia. one man is bringing them 60 new blankets all to be packed up and shipped to afghanistan this weekend. d. >> they deserve so much more.

overpasses, but i think the big winds will 4e7 us out in that department, but -- help us out in that department, but many of those winter weather advisories we talked about have been canceled and the precipitation is over for most of the region as well. we'll start out with a look at radar so you can see where we're still getting a little bit of rain and a bit of mixing, also, showing up, but this is out in the eastern sections of howard county now and maybe running up toward carroll county, might be getting a little, but the rain is rapidly moving out and that's probably all that we're going to get, maybe a sliver back to the west. i think in the next hour or so the rain will be out of here. let's put it in motion and you can see what i'm talking about. there is your back edge. this is the futurecast at 11:00. so you can see what's going on here. we run this out 4:00 in the morning, everything long gone, really long gone probably at 1 a.m. as we work our way through the
